Burnside Bibs for winter

When you have a garment that you love to pieces, it makes perfect sense to just make the exact same thing again, right?

The Burnside Bibs by Sew House 7 was one of my most unexpected pattern loves of 2020. The striped linen pair I made is a close contender for my favourite garment of the year. Each time I put them on, I feel comfortably but chic and entirely myself. My silhouette. My fabric love. My style.

Using the stats from Stylebook App, I can tell you with certainty that I wore my linen Burnside Bibs 15 times since making them in May 2020, which is a lot for me. I have so many things I love in my wardrobe that I tend to rotate to try to get to everything!

After having made them, all my fears about the paper bag back waist vanished and I just feel like they are a fabulous pattern. And with 4000 tags on instagram, I don’t think I’m alone. Seriously, if you’re even in need of minimalist chic linen loving sewing inspiration, scroll the #burnsidebibs hash tag for a while. It’s a little piece of sewing inspo heaven!

So, why mess with sewing happiness?

I decided to remake my beloved pair of linen Burnside Bibs in a winter version, using this 10 oz Railroad striped denim in indigo and white from Blackbird fabrics.

Ahh the power of sewing – what better than to have a winter and summer version of a favourite garment!

My Burnside Bibs

This is going to be a pretty short post because these are pretty much identical to my linen pair – so check out that post for the first-timers perspective on the Burnside Bibs.

My Burnside Bibs are a size 16, the same size I made the last time around as they still fit me just the way I like.

This is the more fitted version of the Burnside Bibs (version 1), but with the straight neckline at the bibs from version 2. Unlike my previous version, I have used the full length leg, rather than the cropped length.

Like in my previous pair, I also added in the bib pockets from the Jenny Overalls by Closet Core Patterns for a pretty detail and some stripe play action.

Winter Bibs

Sorry that this blog post is so short, but I don’t have much to say. I’ll make it up to you with a biiiig post next week, I promise! I didn’t do anything differently when sewing the Burnside Bibs this time around and I still absolutely adore this garment.

Of course, 10 ounce denim behaves differently from linen, so the way the fabric behaves and skims the body is a bit different. I do prefer the linen version, but, I prefer almost anything in linen and, unfortunately, I can’t get away with wearing linen all year around. But the denim version is cosy and warm and makes me feel equally chic and comfortable.

I think I will wear it most often with a turtleneck, but it’s also roomy enough to fit my thickest wool sweaters underneath, which is totally lovely when you are craving comfort overload!

It’s so nice sometimes just sitting down and sewing a project that you know is going to fit and that it will be just your style. So, all in all, these Burnside Bibs gave me a great deal of slow fashion satisfaction and I think this one should be a wardrobe staple for years to come!

  1. I love this pattern and the denim version is lush. I made mine the opposite way around. I made an anthracite twill version. It’s a good job they had a bit of stretch as I should have cut a size bigger. I ended up gifting them to a friend, for no other reason than they were a bit too short on the leg and bib. So next up black linen version, slightly bigger hip size and longer. I love the stripe of that Denim and it’s looks soooooo cosy
