My ultimate striped Olya Shirt

Welcome to yet another Olya Shirt by Paper Theory Patterns!

I’ve made quite a few previous efforts at this pattern – in both its shirt and dress variations. You can read about those previous versions here, here, here or here. And if you do, you may notice that the Olya Shirt really has something of an affinity for stripes!

But, despite having several striped versions in my wardrobe, I still felt that I hadn’t quite achieved my perfect striped Olya Shirt.

Enter: this lovely linen from Zyga! I actually used this linen to sew this princess-seamed Deer and Doe Myosotis Dress. And I loved it so much that I immediately purchased more to have enough for this Olya Shirt.

This Olya Shirt is a size 12, the same size I’ve made before. The Olya Shirt goes up to a size 28, catering for a hip measurement of up to 146 cm.

One thing I have noticed on my previous versions is that the sleeves of the Olya Shirt are a tad too long for me, so I shortened them by 2cm this time around. This will become my go-to length, it’s just right for me.

The only other minor change I made was due to my stripe play desires. Instead of having a separate button placket, I cut it out so that the placket was grown on to the centre front pieces (front yoke and the shirt front proper). This was in order to avoid the need for stripe matching. I decided that these bold stripes would be quite enough on their own that I didn’t really want to add any further contrasting elements along the placket.

I also chose to invert the back pleat and finished the hem with self bias binding. Because the little interior fun of bias binding made out of a stripe fabric always makes me smile.

I also skipped the pockets, which I tend to do for the Olya Shirt. Even though they are definitely an interesting feature, I find that on the versions where I have included them, I worry about them gaping open and I really just prefer the cleaner look without them.

Apart from that, I really don’t have a bunch to say.

This version came out pretty much as I hoped and I can now declare that I have my ultimate striped Olya Shirt!

Have you made the Olya Shirt in stripes? It’s all about that front yoke, right?

  1. I just happened upon your blog and I will be back. I was looking for pattern inspiration and you’ve provided it. I love the Olya shirt with stripes.

  2. I ve never made it but seeing your striped one I will now, I may even pop a contrast colour on inside of collar and cuff! Think it would make a great mid season throw on too x
