Why I Sew

Hi, I’m Beck!

I’m a displaced and highly sun-deprived Australian, trying to make it work in the grey of the Netherlands and this is my sewing blog.

On this blog, I share my personal sewing journey.

I learned to sew in 2014, after having been inspired by a news article about Me Made May and the up-and-coming online sewing community.

I owe everything I know about sewing to this online sewing community and to the amazing work of independent pattern designers who want to teach us how to sew. If there was a prize for the nicest and most welcoming corner of the internet, surely the online sewing community would win hands-down.

Bolstered by the unwavering support of my French husband, our adorable 2-year old monster and my trusty sewing machine, Margaret, I realised in 2014 that there had long been a sewing machine-shaped hole in my life that I never knew existed.

I haven’t looked back since.

On this sewing blog, I post my makes and share some random musings about the process of making them and what it means to me to be a sewist. For more about this blog, click here.

I do this for a few reasons. To try to be more generous with my sewing. To show beginner sewers what’s possible in a very short time. To capture on these pages those voices that rampage through my head at 3am, when I’m in the midst of a new make and I desperately wish there was someone to talk to about sewing and fabric and buttons…

So, what’s your sewing story?
